African Democracy: Which Way Forward?.

African Democracy: Which Way Forward ?
1st Democracy and Political Participation Conference
Calgary, Alberta. 2023.

Youth for Transparency International, strongly share and believe in the ‘African renaissance’, where Leadership must be accountable for any development and progress aimed at public delivery and good governance. Relevant studies of the state of every nation in the African continent reveals that the foremost challenge facing the Nations, is the increasing gap between the people at grassroots level and those in positions of political leadership.
  • How will the extant electoral system in African Nations engender a close connect between political office holders, their constituents and the electorate in view of the existing gap?
  • What shall be done to promote youth and women active participation in political decision making processes?
  • What steps are to be taken to re-define the role of the state, private sectors, civil society, and faith based organizations in such nascent democracies?
 Goals:
To re-engineer the minds of Africans in becoming more responsible in their civic responsibilities and to strengthen their active involvement in political governance and leadership

Objectives:
  • To consider ways and means to ensure increased participation of the African women, and young people on Policy formulation and decision making.
  • To inspire and motivate a high acceptability amongst young people of the need to actively participate in building and strengthening African democracy based on principles of fairness, equity and justice.
  • To encourage the Government to be more transparent and accountable in connection with youth and women political participation.
  • To develop a communiqué at the end of the conference.
The conference seeks to engage key leaders, the civil society, governmental agencies, the media and other stakeholders who are committed to social inclusion, bridging the political divide, deepening participatory and accountable democracy in Africa. There would be a side event during the week - a 3 day Colloquium for law students in developing countries on bioethics chosen topics. Perspectives and Alternate positions.
